Gael de Guichen is a French chemical engineer graduated from the Polytechnic school in Lausanne in 1966. He first was in charge of the conservation project at the prehistoric cave of Lascaux, France. From 1969 until his retirement in 2001, he worked at ICCROM in preventive conservation, first for professionals and then for the public in general. Since 1984 he was Assistant to the Director-General. He has lectured and has been teaching for raising public awareness of conservation and protection of cultural heritage in more than 50 countries including most of the Arabic countries.
